ConsenSys Health Names Sean Manion, PhD as Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Manion will focus on building the foundation of scientific validity to the application of blockchain and emerging tech to healthcare, while applying these new technologies to transform and advance research within the life sciences

New York, NY, March 2, 2020–ConsenSys Health announced today that Sean Manion, PhD, a neuroscientist with two decades of federal research experience, will join as Chief Scientific Officer. In joining ConsenSys Health, Dr. Manion will step away as CEO of Science Distributed, which is being converted to a non-profit to focus on emerging technology applications in health research, bringing researchers together with blockchain as a layer of trust for better science and faster miracles. 

“Dr. Manion has been ahead of the curve in looking at blockchain and other emerging technologies applied to scientific research over the last few years,” said Heather Flannery, Founder and CEO of ConsenSys Health. “He has decades of academic and federal research experience and the vision to establish our path to better science and health outcomes with our federal, academic and industry partners.”

Dr. Manion has co-authored a new book with Yael Bizouati-Kennedy, Blockchain for Medical Research: Accelerating Trust in Healthcare, to be published in April 2020 by CRC Press. He co-founded and serves as a Chief Editor for the peer-reviewed journal Blockchain for Science published by Frontiers where he has recently co-authored the article, “Blockchain Compliance by Design: Regulatory Considerations for Blockchain in Clinical Research”, and is also author of the chapter, “Advancing Health Research with Blockchain” in the HIMSS Series textbook, Blockchain in Healthcare: Innovations that Empower Patients, Connect Professionals and Improve Care (2019, CRC Press).  Dr. Manion is co-founder of Blockchain in Healthcare Global, a 501 (c)(6) under the IEEE International Standards & Technology Organization, and he is a member of the HIMSS Blockchain Task Force and the IEEE Standards Association working group for Blockchain in Healthcare & Life Sciences (p2418.6). He was named a Fellow of the British Blockchain Association in 2019 and serves as an editorial board member of their journal.

Prior to founding Science Distributed, Dr. Manion served as Deputy Chief of Staff and later Research Activities Chief at the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center.  He received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Neuroscience from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2006, and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Temple University in 1999.
